“Talking to women who had unwanted pregnancies, (we found) it was never about pornography but BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO TALK OR COMPROMISE WITH THEIR BOYFRIENDS ABOUT CONTRACEPTIVE USE,” she said in an interview yesterday.

(Terjemahan: Masalah kehamilan luar nikah bukan disebabkan oleh pornografi, TETAPI DISEBABKAN REMAJA WANITA TIDAK PANDAI BERKOMPROMI DENGAN TEMAN LELAKI MEREKA UNTUK MENGGUNAKAN ALAT PENCEGAH KEHAMILAN !!!)

Need for sex education to combat social ills, says council

PETALING JAYA: Sex education should not be treated as a taboo but introduced to combat problems like baby dumping, said Malaysian Council for Child Welfare honorary secretary Ismail Majid. He said that since many teenagers were badly informed about the issue, such education should not be treated as a taboo.

“They must be made aware of the repercussions of their actions,” he told The Star yesterday. Ismail said that during joint road shows with the Social Welfare Department, the council had always educated young adults on pregnancy, AIDS and other diseases as well as taught them to be responsible.

Women’s Aid Organisation executive director Ivy Josiah said there was no correlation between a rise in baby dumping and pornography. In the organisation’s 27-year experience, she said girls with unwanted pregnancies had never spoken about pornography being a factor in their predicament. “Talking to women who had unwanted pregnancies, (we found) it was never about pornography but because they were unable to talk or compromise with their boyfriends about contraceptive use,” she said in an interview yesterday.

Josiah said the organisation disagreed with Federal CID director Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin’s statement yesterday that pornography and weakened family ties led to an increase in baby dumping. However, Josiah agreed that families which were not supportive were part of the cause of baby-dumping. /thestar
