Proposal to legalise illegals divides Sabah

The Star 25 July 2010

KOTA KINABALU: A proposal calling for illegal immigrants to become legalised workers is sharply dividing business and industry groups and local communities in Sabah.

The influential Federation of Sabah Manufacturers and the Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association are backing the suggestion from the Human Resources Ministry.

However, former Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) vice-chairman Tan Sri Simon Sipaun and a Rela senior official described the proposal as encouraging foreigners to infringe on the country’s laws.

The ministry’s proposal was among 51 suggestions forwarded by a special laboratory to tackle issues related to foreign workers.

Federation president Datuk Wong Ken Thau said the proposal would help address Sabah’s long-standing illegal immigrant problem as enforcement alone could not resolve the issue.

Sipuan said more illegal immigrants would pour into the state if the proposal was implemented.

He said locals must be given priority for jobs while illegal immigrants must be deported and only allowed to return with proper documentation to work.

“To take in foreigners, they must have documents, so that we can monitor their activities,” said Sipaun, who is also the former state secretary.

Echoing Sipaun’s views, Keningau Rela officer Ebin Momin said many interior people were upset with the suggestion.

“The people are asking why the Government even bothered about temporary detention centres for illegal immigrants when they are thinking about hiring them as workers,” he said.
Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman had said on Tuesday that the proposal would require a careful study to ensure the move did not backfire."
Nampaknya, UMNO semakin terdesak.
Datang pun dah cara haram. Jangan sampai anak-anak bangsa di perkosa a.k.a. gangbang pulak oleh penjenayah merangkap pendatang haram yang sudah beri IC tuh.. Haram sungguh UMNO nih!
