Thursday April 28, 2011 MACC officer: Hishamuddin didn’t want his role revealed By WANI MUTHIAH

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officer revealed that he and his colleagues were instructed not to divulge the role played by then Selangor MACC deputy chief Hishamuddin Hashim in the investigations involving Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah.

Azeem Hafeez Jamaluddin told the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock that Hishamuddin had instructed the MACC officers involved in the case to say that the probe was headed by the state investigation unit chief Hairul Ilham Hamzah.

He added that in reality, the operations were carried out by Hishamuddin who has since been appointed the Negri Sembilan MACC director.

“In our police statements, we mentioned the operation was headed by Hishamuddin. But we were told by him (Hishamuddin) in a meeting to say that it was Hairul Ilham,” Azeem Hafeez, 27, said.

However, apart from saying it was Hairul Ilham who had headed the investigations, all MACC officers who had been queried had not lied about the circumstances surrounding Teoh's death, Azeem Hafeez added.

Teoh, who was Ean Yong's political secretary, was taken to the Selangor MACC office at the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam on July 15, 2009 for questioning over the alleged irregular disbursement of state funds.

He was found dead at the building's fifth floor service corridor the following day.

Counsel representing the Bar Council Cheow Wee read out some incriminating SMSes between Azeem Hafeez and two of his colleagues when questioning the MACC officer.

In one SMS to his colleague Zurinawati Zulkifli which cited that MACC's then director of investigations Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdul had wanted to see all the officers to know what happened, Azeem Hafeez had replied: “For what? The story will become different as long as H. H (Hishamuddin Hashim) is there.”

(Mohd Shukri is currently the MACC deputy commissioner in charge of operations.)

Earlier in the day, Klang MACC officer Zulkefly Aziz, 44, admitted he had told some untruths to cover up the fact that he had played truant from work on July 16, 2009.

“Why didn't you tell the truth? You were on the CCTV recording. You realised your mistake but you have not corrected it until now,” chided commission chairman Federal Court judgeTan Sri James Foong.

Zulkefly also claimed that he slept at Plaza Masalam's common surau on the 13th floor.

Commissioner Datuk T. Selventhiranathan asked Zulkefly: “Why is your story so strange?”
